How many people still think that being tanned means having a healthier and more attractive appearance? Today, with greater awareness and updated information, we know that Skin health comes before color. But many people still wonder about this topic.
According to the latest study by theHeliocare Observatory by Cantabria Labs, conducted on over 45.000 people in Italy, Spain and Portugal, some very interesting data emerge. In Italy, 44% of those interviewed still consider a tan synonymous with beauty. But sun protection is much more than just an aesthetic issue.

Behaviour of Italians under the sun
The first thing that catches the eye is that 93% of Italians say they use sunscreen, but only 46% choose an SPF 50 or higher. And even worse: only 15% use it all the year.
Summary table of Italians' habits
| Behavior | Percentage |
|---|---|
| Use sunscreen | 93% |
| Use SPF 50+ | 46% |
| Apply protection before going out | 44% |
| Use protection all year round | 15% |
| Use sunscreen products from the previous year | 17% |
THEskin aging is a topic known to 55% of the interviewees, while only 30% associate exposure to the sun with skin damage and 24% to theaging. Much work is still needed to dismantle entrenched beliefs.
Why Sun Protection is Essential
Sunlight is essential for the synthesis of vitamin D, but uncontrolled exposure can cause photoaging, hyperpigmentations, sun allergies and, in the most serious cases, skin cancer.
96% of those interviewed know that bad habits can increase the risk of cancer, but only 53% are aware of the damages of blue light.
The Real Reasons to Use Sunscreen
Here's why Italians say to use sunscreen:
- 36% to avoid sunburn
- 23% to prevent wrinkles and blemishes
- 41% for health reasons (tumors, allergies, sensitivities)
Only 9% follow a complete routine which also includes solar supplements for photoprotection. A good habit to encourage.
Vitamin D and Photoprotection: Is It Really a Conflict?
47% of Italians hire Vitamin D supplements, especially women. Italy is the country where these supplements are most widespread. But protecting yourself from the sun does not mean to block completely Vitamin D synthesis: 15-30 minutes of indirect exposure (hands and face) are enough to keep it active.
The ABCDE Rule: Knowing It Can Save Your Life
An encouraging fact: 67% of Italians know the rule ofABCDE, useful for recognizing suspicious moles:
- A: Asymmetry
- B: Irregular edges
- C: Uneven color
- D: Dimensions greater than 6 mm
- E: Rapid evolution
This simple rule is a fundamental tool in melanoma prevention.

Advice I would give to a friend (and to you too)
- Apply sunscreen even in winter, especially if you work on a PC (blue light!)
- Choose high SPF, even if you have dark skin
- Reapply every 2 hours if you are outdoors or after swimming
- Consult the dermatologist at least once a year
- Avoid last year's products, may no longer be effective
Conclusions
Protecting your skin doesn't mean giving up the sun, but living the sun intelligently. If we really want to take care of our skin, we must start with small daily choices: a good sunscreen, a constant routine, and the awareness that beauty starts from health.
